Godrej PCS set for "vertical take-off"

Godrej Precision Components and Systems (PCS) division engaged in hi-tech aerospace manufacturing activities, is the fastest growing business unit of Godrej. Starting operations in in 1985, with development of critical, high precision spacecraft components, made out of exotic alloys, PCS today is executing major aerospace projects involving precision machining, precision fabrication (welding & brazing), heat treatment, surface treatment, assembly, testing & supply of complex & air worthy systems. PCS has amassed a rich experience with the successful development and productionisation of liquid propulsion engines, defence systems, satellite components and assemblies, actuator assemblies and other sub assemblies for aircraft and dish antennas with feed systems. In the domestic segment, it supplies to various centres of ISRO, DRDL, HAL, BDL, ECIL and BEL, among others. On the export front, its customers include Moog, Eaton, Snecma, Aircelle France and Honeywell. Manned by 600 dedicated and trained employees, the specialised Rs 50 crore infrastructure of over 10,000 square metres catering to the demanding requirements of the aerospace industry include a large CNC machine shop, weld shop with ATIG, AMIG orbital machines, heat treatment and surface treatment facilities with wide spectrum capability, elaborate test facilities, CMMs and Other CNC measuring devices for inspection and NDT facilities. PCS is AS –9100, ISO 14001and OHSAS 18001 certified. With prestigious Nadcap accreditation for chemical processing (Anodisation Type I, II, III) and passivation alodine coating and NDT (FPI & MPI), it has achieved an important milestone in progress towards being an assembly/system supplier. PCS has embarked on several key initiatives which will enable it to move towards lean manufacturing system, in about one to two years. Some of the targets PCS has set for itself are: OEE of 85 per cent , reducing scrap rate to less then 0.5 per cent, self certification of more then 60 per cent of its strength, reducing weld & dimensional defect reduction below 0.5 per cent through use of tools like five why analysis, implementation of proprietary web based quality Management System (QMS) software by December 2009 and creation of R&D/Production culture. PCS has also initiated a consortium which offers complete end-to-end solutions -- "Mind to Market" -- to its customers. This would help it to move towards a complete solution provider and positions it in "Design to build" category from "Built to Print" category. This approach opens up the opportunity to partner with its customers in their future developmental programmes. Godrej PCS is currently on its journey in global market to become tier I and tier II suppliers. It has also laid out an ambitious plan to be OEM supplier for line replaceable unit (LRUs).In 2005, PCS decided to go global as Government of India announced its plan to modernise Armed Forces and also introduce mandatory clause for offset in defence procurement. PCS started getting enquiries for budgetary quotes and when the Global Primes found cost and technology arbitrage, placed trial orders on it. "We did very well in this mock drill and today have established ourselves with OEMs in USA and Europe", a Godrej official said. Godrej is now increasing its participation with its existing customers and expanding the list of global customers to include Goodrich, IAI, Rafael, Rolls Royce and Avio. Godrej PCS has established firm foothold in the domestic aerospace market as an innovative, persistent, committed and progressive partners for major programmes like PSLV, GSLV, BrahMos, LRSAM, ALH-Dhruv, LCA– Tejas, Radars & Antenna systems. In 2008–2009, this division recorded a turnover of Rs 30 crore, establishing a strong platform for vertical take off. Some of its important initiatives that it has now embarked on include: To go up the value chain from component suppliers to sub-systems suppliers of LRU’s like valves, regulators, filter pumps, actuators; ISO 27001 for data security; add to NADCAP list special process from heat treatment and welding; economical sourcing of raw materials, Std./BOI from Global Suppliers; expand vendor base; investment in good scheduling software; set up sheet metal shop; and automation in welding. Godrej PCS is poised to accelerate its business to Rs 75 crore in 2009–10; Rs 120 crore in 2010–11 and Rs 150 crore in 2011–12. Godrej PCS has a healthy order booking of more than Rs 100 crore to be delivered in next two years. The division intends to move up the value chain by involving in assembly, integration and certification for airworthiness. Godrej PCS expects exports to contribute 30 per cent of its business turnover in 2010-11 and 50 per cent from 2011-12 onwards. In the next three years, it anticipates the space sector to account for 25 per cent of its turnover, missiles 35 per cent and the rest aircraft and helicopters segment, among others.
